APPRENTICESHIP PROGRAM
The WBFAA has established a budget of $250,000 to develop and launch
the FIRE/LIFE SAFETY CERTIFICATION PROGRAM and establish the UNILATERAL
APPRENTICESHIP AND TRAINING COMMITTEE (UATC). The budget includes
bringing together the experts necessary to ensure that this program
will satisfy the needs of the legislation and the state mandates and
serve you and the fire/life safety industry for years to come.
WBFAA Voices Concerns at State Hearings
By George Gunning
The Division of Apprenticeship Standards held hearings in August in
Los Angeles and San Francisco on the proposed regulations for the
certification and apprenticeship program which is mandated by state
law. I want to thank those members of the CAA and CAFAA who attended
these meetings, and to the joint statement presented on behalf of
our industry by CAA and CAFAA. This is part of an ongoing process
to make sure that we are treated fairly and equitably by any new regulations
and that they do not harm our ability to conduct business.
On the legislative front, AB 1087 appears
to be moving ahead and is accepted to be passed and signed into law.
The bill was written to clarify AB 921 and AB 931. We made several
efforts through the legislative advocate to explore the possibility
of being exempt from the mandate of the earlier legislation, but these
were not successful. The WBFAA, with CAA and CAFAA, continue to engage
in productive dialogue with all the parties associated with the law
and its implementation, and we are hopeful for a successful outcome.
Please watch your mail, and respond to
calls for action for all activities related to this legislation. It
is a critical issue, and it is important enough for you to commit
some time and financial resources to support your position.
